About Us

Smithtown Area AAUW was founded in 1973 with 38 charter members. We have always supported the legislative and philanthropic efforts of the Association in Washington DC.Locally, we provided awards to graduates from 5 high schools when our membership was at a peak 125. Annual events include a Book and Author Luncheon, a holiday party where we collect needed items for the victims of domestic violence, and attendance at District conferences for all the Branches on Long Island. Our literature discussion group meets every month for a lively exchange. Join us for fellowship, fun, and fund raising.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Our nonpartisan, nonprofit organization has more than 170,000 members and supporters across the United States, as well as 1,000 local branches and 800 college and university partners. Since AAUW’s founding in 1881, our members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political.

AAUW MISSION STATEMENT

American Association of University Women (AAUW) advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. AAUW believes that together we can transform society for the better. Our vision is simple – we bring people together united behind the common goal of breaking through educational and economic barriers for women and girls. By joining our more than 170,000 members and supporters, 1,000 branches, and 800 college/university institutional partners, you become part of AAUW’s powerful voice. Since its first meeting in 1881, AAUW has been a catalyst for change. When more than a century ago a Harvard physician claimed that higher education jeopardized women’s health, AAUW conducted research that proved he was wrong. When the number of female college students grew, AAUW funded fellowships to support them. When girls and boys were treated differently in school, AAUW research put gender bias on the national agenda. When women receive less pay than their male colleagues for the same job, AAUW continues researching, educating, and advocating for equity.
